Design of the Takhtakorpu reservoir and hydropower plant
A strategic hydraulic engineering project of national significance, vital for the reliable drinking and municipal water supply of Baku, Sumgait, and the Absheron Peninsula. The headworks is positioned at the 32nd km marker of the Velvelechay — Jeyranbatan canal within the Shabran and Siazan districts, located 5 km west of the Shabran — Siazan highway at topographic elevations ranging between 50 and 250 meters.
The engineered infrastructure complex comprises:
• An earthfill dam featuring a central impermeable clay core with sandy-gravel shells, measuring 1,180 m in crest length, 750 m in base footprint width, and involving approximately 25 million m³ of placed fill;
• A reservoir dam structure with a structural height of 135.5 m, boasting a gross storage capacity of 268 million m³ (active storage volume of 218.9 million m³), representing one of the highest and most voluminous embankment dams of its type across Europe;
• Hydraulic diversion and discharge spillway tunnels;
• An integrated hydroelectric power plant (HPP) delivering clean renewable power.
