Conceptual design of a seawater desalination plant in Sumgayit
A strategic technological and hydraulic infrastructure project engineered to establish an alternative potable water supply source for the Baku-Sumgayit metropolitan area and the wider Absheron Peninsula by desalinating Caspian Sea water. The project addresses acute regional water deficits, reduces vulnerability to seasonal climate variations, and secures long-term water resilience through industrial seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO).
The project scope encompasses comprehensive conceptual engineering design coupled with extensive on-site geotechnical investigations:
• Conceptual process architecture for the seawater desalination facility, integrating dissolved air flotation (DAF), multi-media pre-treatment, high-recovery SWRO membrane trains, remineralization, and high-pressure pumping infrastructure;
• Hydraulic modeling and route alignment of the main treated-water conveyance transmission pipeline discharging into the Jeyranbatan Reservoir blending hub;
• Offshore deepwater intake velocity caps and engineered multi-port brine diffusers designed for environmentally compliant dispersion into the Caspian marine environment;
• Execution of full-scale onshore and nearshore geotechnical, geophysical, and topographical-geodetic field surveys at the designated project plot in Sumgayit.
Deploying this desalination asset delivers an uninterrupted, climate-independent volume of high-standard potable water for millions of urban consumers and strategic industries across the Absheron Peninsula.
