Conceptual Design of the Garachay Reservoir
A conceptual hydraulic engineering project focused on water resources optimization, flood risk mitigation, and agricultural development across north-eastern Azerbaijan. The project outlines the establishment of an impoundment reservoir on the Garachay mountain river in the Guba district to secure dependable, year-round irrigation for an 8,600-hectare agricultural command area, including the integration of 4,600 hectares of newly developed arable and orchard lands.
The technical evaluation outlines two alternative dam development options:
• Option I: construction of a 40 m high dam with a crest length of 202 m, impounding a reservoir with a total capacity of 12.0 million m³;
• Option II: construction of a 50 m high dam with a crest length of 261 m, creating an expanded reservoir storage capacity of 25.5 million m³.
The engineering analysis encompasses flood and debris-flow risk assessments, spillway discharge capacity sizing, sedimentation control measures, and layout planning for regional distribution canals.
