Conceptual Design of the Alijanchay Reservoir
A large-scale conceptual hydraulic engineering project aimed at the comprehensive advancement of water resources and agribusiness infrastructure within the Sheki-Zagatala economic zone. The initiative entails the formulation of a conceptual engineering design for a multi-purpose storage reservoir on the Alijanchay River in the Sheki district. The strategic objective is to secure reliable irrigation across a 16,100-hectare command area, facilitating the agricultural commissioning of 10,500 hectares of newly irrigated lands.
The study establishes two alternative structural development schemes:
• Option I: construction of a 30 m high embankment dam with a crest length of 464 m, forming an impoundment basin with a gross capacity of 39.8 million m³;
• Option II: construction of a 46 m high dam with a crest length of 667 m, delivering an expanded strategic reservoir storage capacity of 164.6 million m³.
The conceptual scope incorporates comprehensive hydrological flood modeling, spillway sizing, alignment studies for main off-take conveyance canals, and sediment management strategies for the mountain river basin.
