Conceptual Design of the Velvelechay Reservoir
A conceptual hydraulic engineering project focused on water resource optimization, flood mitigation, and agricultural infrastructure modernization across the Guba-Khachmaz region. The initiative outlines the creation of an impoundment and regulation reservoir on the Velvelechay mountain river in the Guba district to secure a reliable, year-round irrigation water supply for a 6,000-hectare agricultural command area, including the integration of 2,000 hectares of newly developed arable lands.
The technical evaluation details four alternative development schemes:
• Dam height varies from 40 m to 70 m across the evaluated options;
• Crest length ranges from 811.9 m to 1,102 m;
• Impounded reservoir gross storage capacity scales from 34.6 million m³ (Variant I) up to 110.15 million m³ (Variant IV).
The engineering analysis addresses catchment hydrology, debris-flow control, sediment deposition forecasts, spillway discharge hydraulic sizing, and off-take integration into regional gravity-fed conveyance canal networks.
