Conceptual Design of the Turianchay Reservoir
A large-scale conceptual hydraulic engineering project focused on water resources optimization, flood risk mitigation, and agricultural infrastructure modernization across the Central Aran and foothill zones of Azerbaijan. The initiative outlines the construction of an impoundment and regulation reservoir on the Turianchay (Turyanchai) River to mitigate seasonal flood hazards and provide a dependable irrigation water supply for a 15,378-hectare command area (including 3,478 hectares of newly irrigated lands and improved water security across 11,900 hectares of existing farmlands).
Key structural and volumetric parameters of the proposed facility:
• Dam maximum structural height: 30.0 m;
• Dam crest length: 298.0 m;
• Gross reservoir design storage capacity: 53.49 million m³;
• Useful (active) live storage capacity: 37.03 million m³.
The conceptual engineering framework encompasses catchment discharge modeling, sediment deposition analysis, preliminary hydraulic sizing of spillway chutes and bottom outlet headworks, alongside optimization of gravity conveyance off-takes connecting into the regional canal network.
