Conceptual Design of the Kura River Reservoir
A large-scale strategic hydraulic engineering conceptual project focused on regulating water resources along the South Caucasus' largest hydrological artery — the Kura River. The primary objective is to secure dependable multi-year irrigation for a 12,000-hectare agricultural command area while providing reliable downstream flood control and regional water storage reserves.
The conceptual engineering framework evaluates three alternative structural configurations:
• Option 1: construction of a 30 m high embankment dam with a crest length of 1,783 m, impounding a reservoir with a total capacity of 271.4 million m³;
• Option 2: construction of a 40 m high dam with a crest length of 2,001 m, creating an impoundment basin with an active storage of 600.5 million m³;
• Option 3: construction of a 50 m high dam with an extended crest length of 2,728 m, generating a maximum reservoir volume of 650.8 million m³.
The technical scope incorporates comprehensive river discharge modeling, sediment deposition assessments, spillway discharge hydraulic sizing, and conveyance scheme optimization for regional irrigation networks.
